Typography System Overview

Titles, Headings, and Body Text Explained

Written by Nuno Batista

Two things to keep in mind

  1. Changes are global. A font style is shared across many screens. Editing it in one place changes it everywhere that style appears.

  2. Text does not shrink to fit. If you make a size much larger, text may wrap onto more lines or get cut off inside buttons and badges. Preview your store after big changes.

Title - Large page headlines

Where it appears: the big headline at the top of key pages — the welcome/onboarding screens, sign-in and create-account screens, and the loyalty landing page.

When you change it: these hero headlines grow, shrink, or restyle. Because these are the first thing customers see on first-run and sign-in, changes here are very visible even though they appear on few screens.

Heading- Section titles across the store

Where it appears: section titles and card headers almost everywhere — home page sections, product page titles, loyalty pages, orders, collections, blog and reviews. When you change it: one of the most far-reaching changes you can make. Nearly every scrollable page has a heading, so expect to see the effect across the whole store.

SubHeading- Sub-headings and the screen title bar

Where it appears: secondary headings on product, profile, collections and wishlist pages — and the title shown in the bar at the top of the screen (the navigation bar). When you change it: as well as sub-headings, this changes the title at the top of virtually every screen. If you increase the size a lot, long screen titles may be shortened with "…". Check your main screens' top bars after editing.

ButtonHeading- Button text

Where it appears: the text inside buttons — checkout and cart actions, loyalty actions, and product page buttons.

When you change it: button labels change everywhere. Buttons have a fixed height, so a much larger size can cause the label to wrap or be clipped. Increase gradually and preview key buttons like "Add to cart" and checkout.

Body Large - Main Body Text

Where it appears: primary reading text — product descriptions, account/profile text, and general informational paragraphs. Heaviest on the product page and profile. When you change it: your main descriptions and paragraphs resize/restyle across the store.

Body Large Emphasized- Prices, Ratings, Emphasis

Where it appears: emphasized 16pt text — product prices, ratings, selected variant labels, and highlighted values. Very heavily used on the product page.

When you change it: this is the style behind most prices and emphasized values. Changing it is one of the most noticeable edits on product and listing pages — check price alignment afterward.

Body Regular- "everyday" text

Where it appears: the default text used most widely in the app — list rows, secondary descriptions, and general content on almost every page.

When you change it: this is the single most widely used style. A change here is felt across essentially the entire store, so review broadly.

Body Regular Emphasized- Tags and Badges

Where it appears: emphasized 14pt text — labels and highlighted rows, most often on the product page and in checkout.

When you change it: labels and highlighted rows change. Smaller footprint than bodyRegular, but still spread across several key pages.

Body Small- Small text, captions, details

Where it appears: the smallest everyday text — captions, secondary details, and meta information under products, in checkout, loyalty, and product listings.

When you change it: all your fine print and small details resize. Because this text is already small (12 by default), increasing the size usually improves readability; decreasing it or picking a hard-to-read font can make details difficult to read.

Body Small Emphasized- Tags and Badges

Where it appears: small emphasized text — tags and badges such as discount badges and status tags.

When you change it: your badges and tags restyle. Badges are compact, so a larger size may make them wrap or overflow their pill shape — keep changes modest and preview a product with a discount badge.

Best practice: make changes in small steps, then open a few representative screens — home, a product page, checkout, and one page with badges — to confirm everything still looks right before publishing.
